HRI Hospital – Brookline Detox and Rehab Services
HRI Hospital – Brookline runs detox, residential treatment, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient. Medical supervision covers the withdrawal period, where alcohol and benzodiazepines carry real risk. The structured element runs during the day and people go home afterwards. What suits one person will not suit another, so ask directly.
Both conditions are treated in parallel, which is what the research supports. Medication-assisted treatment combines approved medication with counseling and clinical review. Ask how the program handles someone who has been through treatment before. Whether medication is available is worth confirming at the outset.

OK first and foremost, a lot of staff spoken foreign language and while on shift and that’s not OK. second of all there wasn’t enough staff on shift to work anyways I know that the staff when they work they did care and… they did talk to us and that was a good thing, but there were a lot of male staff. There were not a lot of females, but I did get a chance to calm my brain down and relax and do a mental reboot, which was something I needed, but I guess at all places now you have to sign a three day to leave any place.
I just finished my PHP program today. I was in the Women’s Group for 1 month. I came home from the program every single day, emotionally exhausted. But even though I was exhausted, I looked forward to going back to the… group every single morning . I was in the group , 5 days a week and I was in person and the program is very intense and requires an extreme amount of hard work. The clinicians led by Lia were all phenomenal. I want to thank each and every one of them for teaching so many skills which I have been using every single day to help me deal with my newly diagnosed underlying mood behavior disorder which I now realize I have had since I was very young. Thank you Lia, Jess, Rachel, Mary, Lily, Yenna and also from group 5 … Emily, Alexandria, Daisy, and Jasmine. I also want to thank my psychiatrist, Dr. Vivian Emuobe. She is an exceptional physician/ nurse practitioner and a very, very kind and caring woman. Prior to my attending the program, I was in the hospital for one month and I had 1 to 3 panic attacks almost every single day while I was in the hospital . After I got out of the hospital, I was unsure if I wanted to attend the program, but it was the best decision that I could have made. Because of the program I am in a really good place right now and I am very happy. Thank you all again , Jeannie McCusker
I want justice for the rudeness, and neglect i received on my last afternoon there.these r the injuries I received during my fall.
Thank you for the group counseling.
I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the extraordinary care and support you provided to my mother during her time in the Women's Program. The entire staff treated us with unwavering kindness, empathy, and… respect. My mother truly feels that this program healed her life, and as her support system, I am profoundly grateful to every person who played a part in her journey. The group therapy sessions were deeply meaningful, grounded, and respectful. Every single group leader brought a unique, thoughtful approach that made a real difference in her progress. Art therapy was especially meaningful to her. Having the flexibility to start with in-person treatment when she needed that direct connection, and then seamlessly transition to the Zoom option, was a perfect fit for her healing process. I want to extend a few special recognitions: Rachel: Thank you for your patience and thoroughness when guiding us through the program options. You spoke so clearly, provided concrete examples, and created a welcoming space for all our questions. Susan: Completing intake can be daunting, but you made my mother feel completely comfortable. Even while asking difficult questions, your nonjudgmental, supportive, and encouraging warmth set a safe tone from the very beginning. Rebekah: You were a vital anchor in her recovery. Your active listening and expert insight made all the difference in finding the most effective medication plan, carefully tailored to how and when it would help her best. Thank you all for combining your professional expertise with such genuine, loving care. You are truly amazing people doing life-changing work. With heartfelt appreciation
Triangle is an excellent partial hospital program! The clinical team of Abbi, V, Francisco, and Paige are all amazing! Highly recommend this inclusive, queer space if you are in need of healing from trauma and/or other… various mental health issues. Cannot recommend enough! 5 stars! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Big thanks to the team!
After sitting on my hands for the last year I finally decided to post my thoughts on this "hospital." I'm specifically speaking on the IOPs, which are useless. There are arbitrary rules that get restated every day at… the start of every group. Ridiculous things like snapping instead of clapping, for instance. Also, you're expected to be extremely tight-lipped. You can't actually talk about difficult topics or personal experiences. If you go to these programs, you will be babied rather than treated like an adult. Additionally, you will not be given a voice. It seems like the kind of place you might work at if you love to hear yourself talk, since that's all the "clinicians" ever do. There's no clear path to treatment at all. You get sporadic 1-to-1 appointments with a nurse or a psychiatrist and it never means anything. Then you graduate out of the program with no useful info and no referrals to continuing outpatient care. To make a long story short: avoid this hospital at all costs if you value yourself.
I like some of staff and some ppl too as well I bonded with and thy help me out and friend with too but still have trauma and meds don't work with my right meds I used to take nows making feel sick now when I left to… take them at night gotten sick and not feel well so didn't not take them and feel normal like I took them when I had them from thy hri hospital where I was there with u guys so idk what to do feeling weird now and what do I do now so confused about this I might need help from DR deven ❓or Mama too
Its a hospital that is clearly under funded and understaffed. I can only imagine how difficult the job is and how hard it is for people to feel like theyre getting any real help. Unfortunately I dont feel like its… solely on the responsibility on staff. The programs there are what you make of it. You have to allow yourself to be transparent and honest with how youre feeling. The system and resources aren't perfect but they are there to help us. I have found new insight and ways to manage my diagnosis thanks to HRI, particularly in the TRIANGLE PROGRAM. Shoutout to Anna, Claire, and Vee. The clinicians were making the most of what they got. There is one particular NP who is bad at their job. The food... is... free. Don't expect it to fix everything, dont expect to be healed, but at least allow yourself to feel something different and give it a fair shot.
Absolutely awful. There's no reason to attend this awful hospital. They will just delay the inevitable recovery that you should be getting. They offer no deep work, no follow-up, just reading from a script. They are… extremely inexperienced and operate mostly out of fear. Even though I made suggestions none of it was listened to. Awful. In my opinion. Also the person named Josh should be fired.
“Triangle” is truly an incredible program that redefines what it means to been seen, heard, and get actual and valuable resources in a supportive and welcoming space. Wherever you are in your trauma and mental health… journey, Triangle is there for you! The group sessions are lead by qualified clinicians and each group is engaging, informative, impactful, and helpful. This program offers PHP and OP level care with in person or virtual, with specific aim and intention for the LGBTQiA+ community. I personally recommend in-person for the best experience, but if distance or insurance coverage is your barrier, the clinician team works hard to make the virtual attendees feel included, heard, and engaged in the content. Due to my own personal experience working with them over the past two weeks, I strongly recommend working with the clinicians V and Anna. It was clear from my first day in this PHP that V and Anna are very committed to seeing, supporting, and providing for all attendees. They work hard to ensure everyone’s needs are met—not any easy task! They are both truly invaluable resources with a plethora of knowledge and experience that they bring to the table everyday. If you’re not sure if Triangle is right for you, ignore that intrusive thought and come on down!
Absolutely amazing experience! The staff was professional, welcoming, and went above and beyond to make everything smooth and enjoyable. I went in scared and nervous but after speaking with Dr. Vivian I felt so… comfortable, safe, and respected she listened to my concerns and genuinely helped me. I would absolutely recommend to others seeking mental health support. Thankyou!
The Provider , Vivian is a true Earth Angel ~ I'm so glad that I have the pleasure of knowing her . Thank you Vivian ,for everything. I've been getting mental health services for 27 YEARS long painful years, I’ve needed… them for 40 years .. and I have NEVER felt this validated and heard before. Thank you, thank you for helping me find myself again.
COVID OUTBREAK at HRI!!!!!! COVID OUTBREAK at HRI!!!!!! A patient almost died getting COVID at HRI. Angel was detoxing and got COVID because they couldn’t actually act like a hospital. A prison would have done a better… job. He had to go to the ER in the middle of the night by Brookline police escort due to his vitals being so bad and him wheezing for air. What a DANGEROUS facility and inpatient. DANGEROUS. HRI is more akin to a prison or holding cell/tank layout instead of a proper hospital for treating mental health issues or acute. They take your cellphone before you enter. No pens allowed but other items were allowed/permitted that were more dangerous. You only have access to cordless phones or two wall phones. Timed eating for meals in a chain gang style to the cafeteria for less than 15 minutes, hunting for your meds or not having the right medications, no therapy schedule throughout the day (even though a giant board exists that says so), untrained staff for mental health, and a Dr psychiatrist who is evil god complex, Mathews, + change your Meds without permission or discussion. 2SOUTH inpatient had a COVID outbreak with a gag order by the administration and Dr Matthews/psychiatrist (if that is even his real name) to deny and not test or quarantine patients intentionally. While a patient who was the carrier was never treated or sent to the ER weeks before I even arrived. I got infected around 3/28/2026 - 3/29/2026 due to zero quarantine and patients just coughing and gagging night and day. I wanted to go to an ER due to having previous long covid issues + family history of cardiac issues and that was stopped by Dr Mathews and staff. Any hospital ER staff should READ this review and STOP sending patients to this HRI, immediately. Staff are mostly not trained to handle patients or situations. One staff member pushed another patient so hard intentionally they almost hit their head against a wooden chair in my room and the Brookline police were called in via patients. That same staff member was not put on leave or probation by his seniors and came back that same night to work Night Shift the same day. The severity and range of patients being admitted is nuts. One patient was naked half the time and peeing on the floor or throwing food at other patients or walking into patients rooms unannounced. Another nursing supervisor Gisele is also evil and so desensitized as with the regular staff to the inhumane treatment of patients, the norm at HRI. There is no updated ventilation for industrial filters for air quality and circulation, Zero for showers and possible mold. The most patients did was watch tv and pace around or sleep. A modern 2026 “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest” without the lobotomies and lack of groups. You are jeopardizing your patients safety and health if you send any of them to HRI Brookline or Jamaica Plain inpatient. Please if you read this or have stayed inpatient report HRI to the Department of Mental Health, Department of Health, and your insurance company. They should be closed down permanently and it’s asking for something worse to happen if they are allowed to stay open. Again, Any hospital ER staff should READ this review and STOP sending patients to this HRI, IMMEDIATELY. *also the image of the covid test was taken 30 minutes after being discharged from HRI
This place is a horror movie bunch of fake none caring workers that don't know idea about care let alone by a human I was there for 2 days and thank God !! But one person I can say was decent supervise nurse but through… out that they lost 95% of my clothes that they supposedly kept safe, I call and call get no answer or either get hanged up on or rudely talked to like if I don't have the right!! To have an issue about 95% of my belongings missing there cameras go check. Look what all I had when first came in guys come on is not a huge place can't be that hard to find someone things all there things they came with and if so check the cameras on the date I got there at night I will gladly give you the time ..???? I need answers about my belongings
I can’t say enough great things about the Triangle outpatient program. From the moment I started, I felt welcomed, supported, and truly cared for. The environment is safe and encouraging, and the staff goes above and… beyond to make sure every individual feels heard and valued. The program itself is well-structured and has helped me grow both mentally and emotionally in ways I didn’t expect. A very special shoutout to Nurse Practitioner Chrismanie Saintloth, who has been absolutely amazing throughout my journey. Her compassion, patience, and genuine dedication to her patients really stand out. She takes the time to listen, understand, and provide thoughtful care that makes a real difference. It’s rare to find someone who is not only highly skilled but also so deeply kind and supportive. I’m incredibly grateful for everything Triangle has done for me and would highly recommend this program to anyone looking for real support and positive change. Five stars all the way!
Is there ANYONE with INTEGRITY working at this hospital? I would be willing to speak with a staff member who doesn’t gaslight, lie, condescend, be respectful towards others, doesn’t roll eyes at clients, etc about my… experience at HRI but I’m not sure it is possible there is a professional member on the staff of HRI. STAFF needs to be psychologically tested before being hired here AND NOT by HRI STAFF. But, by professionals in the field of Mental Health. The staff at HRI need their own treatment and medication. DO NOT GASLIGHT a client with years more experience in TRAUMA than you will ever have! How DARE these people respond to me when months ago I made a phone appointment with the director of a day program, got ready on Zoom, waited a half hour only to be left with no meeting. No response to my follow up phone call trying to find out what happened. Then, seeing in my Email forms to fill out sent 30 minutes prior to the scheduled ZOOM appointment. And, these people want me to contact them????REALLY????? Is this the medical director who walks around the hallways unlocking doors with signs on them saying “ DO NOT DISTURB. GROUP IN PROCESS” NO ONE-I MEAN NO ONE should be sitting in a room with this medical director accepting medical advice or any prescription of Big Pharma drug. Couldn’t tell the staff from the clients. All behaved very similar. The small group of girls running down the hallway giggling turned out to be staff. That concerns me because I’ve watched this happen several times with different people all with Hospital IDs. I couldn’t tell if I was in a Jr. High School or a hospital. The doctor needs to be escorted around the hospital. He was unlocking doors that has large signs saying “GROUP IN SESSION. DO NOT DISTURB!” He is unaware of his surroundings. He definitely shouldn’t be prescribing medication!! SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE REMOVE THIS MEDICAL DIRECTOR! He obviously needs an intervention. As a professional in Human Services field myself his behaviors are very worrisome. Laughing at me when explaining my trauma is completely uncalled for. Air quality and environmental decoration needs EXTREME HELP! Refresher courses and/or more education for the staff should be a requirement ASAP! Learning to run groups would be helpful. The disrespect towards clients is so inappropriate here. One concern. The staff is very young with very little experience. The seasoned good staff have all left with no mentors to learn from leaving the blind to lead the blind. One staff member didn’t know a very basic tool of trauma. GASLIGHTING STAFF. Rolling their eyes at me. Disrespect throughout the entire program from new staff “running groups” who only read through the handouts. Group members come and go. You never know if the person next to you will ever show up again and if they’re ok or not. You don’t know if they left the program or their time was up. No Good-byes, No wishing well even if that person would like that. These staff members have NO IDEA how to run a Women’s TRAUMA Partial Program. I have more trauma now than I did before entering that building. Hire experienced staff. Do not pretend the young inexperienced staff knows what they are doing. You are dangerous to women. Gaslighting 101! That’s what HRI Staff does best. Gaslight the vulnerable clients. ***THIS REVIEW WAS WRITTEN A YEAR AGO. I FIXED A SPELLING ERROR.
I can't believe I lasted there for 1 month it was absolute torture. I came to this program because of substance abuse issues and the fact that I haven't relapsed due the horrible conditions is amazing, however I knew it… was just temporary. I've never had mental health problems until I got here and it rapidly deteriorated. The classes are a joke, the clinicians actually make a decent attempt to teach and help as much as possible however that's where it ends. The food is terrible, conditions are deplorable, and the transportation is life threatening every trip back and forth. There are no seat belts, and the van is over capacity and on the verge of breaking down; this is no exaggeration. They don't supply you with anything but a small dinner every night which is usually leftovers from 5-7 days prior. The house has cockroaches, rats and bed bugs, however they have made many attempts to eradicate the bed bugs failing every time maybe lasting a week at best before returning. The behavior and the quality of hygiene from the clients in the program is never checked by the staff as long as no one is assaulted nothing gets done. If it's supposed to be a dual diagnosis they are not helping their patients, they are just leaving them to rot and collecting a check that's it, and there's literally no help some of the clients go for weeks without showering and staff says nothing it's all on the clients to solve clinical issues. The clinicians, director Anita, owner of the residential houses Mike, and house manager Steve are awesome and very nice people, but that's all I can sadly say. The food in prison was 3x better than the quality of food here. There are so many other programs in the state of Massachusetts so please do research in finding another place even if you don't have to do the residential program, and you are just doing i.o.p. or p.h.p. during-the day it's a waste of time there are so many other one that accept mass health.
They lost my liver blood work, and didn’t notify me for 3 days causing me to have to stay another night. 3:00 afternoon med not given till 4:20. Social worker: finds a PCP- faxes over all my private medical records- I… live in Ma. This PCP was in Wisconsin, great.. Social worker: I will confirm with your husband that he’s picking you up. He never heard from her. Social worker: I will call your therapist/med provider to set up an appt before you leave, they never heard from her. She gave me a phone number to an IOP, no real follow up on that. They lost my suitcase- par for the course. The floor staff was amazing 10 out of 10. Food was good! I have never witnessed a bigger un organized mess from the nurses and nurse/NP. Got a call at home the day of my discharge saying that a Monday - Friday 9-3 partial was a set for me to attend starting Monday. What, this was never discussed with me at all. The partial was an hour from my home. Showers were not mandatory and the place stunk.
I dropped off a patient and an Asian doctor tried to make patient feel unwelcome🥺and yelled at me because the place I picked him up from didn’t give the right paperwork.
Can’t say to much for legal reasons …..but this place will learn ….and fast
I want to thank all of the staff and supportive group members for my time at this facility. It may have very well saved my life to finally get the intervention and treatment I needed. From intake coordinators to Fabiola… and Anita who ran multiple of my groups; this place got me the helped I needed and finally made some changes in my life. Thank you for all you do and I would recommend this place to anyone who is struggling
Fantastic staff and groups. Very helpful for recovery and moving forward. Would highly recommend to others.
This past summer I attended HRI's Women's Ascend program, and my experience was nothing short of being such an incredibly healing environment that instilled a newfound sense of hope at a time when I felt the complete… opposite. Vivian, my assigned Nurse Practitioner, played such an instrumental role in my healing journey, and I am so incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to have her as my Nurse Practitioner. She truly raised the bar of my expectations in terms of medication management as well as the clinical aspects of my mental health treatment. Being in her care allowed me to be a witness to a level of professionalism, advocacy, and empathy towards mine (and other patient’s) mental health recovery in ways that I hadn’t experienced with any NP/PHMP I’ve worked with before. In addition, HRI's Ascend Program simply wouldn't be the healing space it is for women of color without the continuous arduous efforts of Alexandria as well!! On a daily basis, Vivian and Alex brought forth a level of representation that is so essential in successfully fostering a safe and encouraging environment for all the women of color at Ascend. I personally always felt so seen, so heard, and so cared for. I truly believe the progress I’ve made this summer serves as a testament to all of the hard Vivian, Alex (and the wonderful summer interns) had put in, day in and day out this summer. I am incredibly grateful, and for anyone - especially women of color - are looking for a healing space to truly dedicate healing towards your mental health- you've found the right place!!
The Ascend program was a wonderful, massively helpful space to receive support and care. I found community with people who have lived through and could validate some of my own experiences, and we learned from each other… every day in ways that I never anticipated. We built concrete skills to help us manage our mental health needs, but we also met human beings who were cheering s on every step of our journey. I've very highly recommend this program to femmes of color who need support. You won't find a better group of people to guide you back to what it means to stand on your own two feet in this very complicated, very painful world. This program would not exist without the massively incredible leadership of Alexandria. She is the most incredible clinician I have every encountered. She cares about the Ascend program and making sure that it is a space for for participants to learn skills, build community, and grow. She's an empathetic clinician both for the clients on her individual roster and the large group sessions as a whole. She knows the DBT skills backwards, forwards, upside down, with eyes closed, and with her hands tied behind her back. She has the ability to explain these skills in ways that are accessible for all types of learners and make sure that the cohort finds concrete ways to translate the skills into their personal life experiences. She's also able to do all of this while being an absolute tech wizard on the computer to make sure that community guidelines are followed on zoom, slides are shared, and validate the thoughts of feelings that participants share with the group all at the same time. There's no one else like Alexandria. She is the reason the Ascend program exists. And HRI is EXTREMELY lucky to have her on their staff. But more than that, the Ascend program participants have the privilege of knowing her. Vivian is an incredible nurse practitioner who helps run the program. She maintains the culture of firm but empathetic care for the Ascend participants. She listens to everyone's daily challenges in addition to the chronic trauma experienced by her patients. When people need someone to listen to them 1-1 or check in about some of the group content they're learning and struggling with, her door is always open for a chat during breaks or over lunch. She's a wiz when it comes to thinking of medications at the drop of a hat that may help treat certain symptoms or support a patients' current medication regiment. And if a prescription isn't working, she's quick to think of other medications that can help. She cares so much about the wellbeing of everyone who walks in her office, and they are better off for it.
I am extremely disappointed with HRI Hospital. In my experience, their communication is very poor. They rarely answer the phone, and it’s incredibly hard to get any updates or speak with someone when it matters most.… What makes things worse is that my family member keeps getting released, and within a week he ends up back in the hospital again. It feels like there is no real long-term help or proper care plan in place. We are left feeling helpless, and it doesn’t seem like they are addressing the root of the problem at all. For a hospital that’s supposed to help people heal, I’ve personally witnessed a lack of communication, support, and follow-through. From my experience, this has been one of the most frustrating and disappointing hospitals to work with. I truly hope they improve — but right now, I cannot recommend HRI Hospital based on what my family has gone through.
i have been treated with nothing but dismissal and disrespect by HRI staff and the subsequent places they have referred me to. i went in to address severe mental health issues, and left worse off and with significantly… more trauma than i did upon contacting them. do not trust their claims of LGBTQ+ acceptance or support, as they often fail to meet the bare minimum standards of respect towards trans patients.
