Treatment Centers in Kentucky That Accept Kentucky Medicaid

Kentucky Medicaid, run by the Department for Medicaid Services, pays for drug and alcohol rehab across all 120 counties. Members in one of the five managed care plans, Aetna Better Health, Humana Healthy Horizons, Passport by Molina Healthcare, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan or WellCare of Kentucky, get treatment authorized by that plan rather than by the state.

A Kentucky Medicaid listing names the program’s direct phone line, tells you whether it offers withdrawal management, residential care, intensive outpatient or methadone, and notes Joint Commission or CARF accreditation where it exists. The records behind each listing are Kentucky licensing files and federal treatment registers. Choose a city or a level of care to narrow the list.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Does Kentucky Medicaid Cover Rehab in Kentucky?

Yes. Kentucky Medicaid covers substance use disorder treatment in every county, from screening and assessment through outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential care, withdrawal management, medications and peer support. Programs taking members appear among the addiction treatment programs in Kentucky, and the rehabs that take Kentucky Medicaid page gathers them statewide.

Kentucky runs its Medicaid coverage for rehab through the Department for Medicaid Services, part of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Five managed care organizations hold 2026-2027 contracts, and behavioral health sits inside each plan’s benefit. Members in long-term care or a 1915(c) waiver stay in fee-for-service, where the department handles authorization itself.

Does Kentucky Medicaid Cover Inpatient Rehab in Kentucky?

Yes. Kentucky Medicaid pays for 24-hour residential addiction treatment at the four ASAM residential levels, 3.1 to 3.7, and for inpatient rehab programs in hospitals. Kentucky’s substance use waiver, in place since July 1, 2019, lifts the federal limit on larger facilities so Medicaid can pay for residential stays in programs of up to 96 beds per location.

How long will Kentucky Medicaid pay for residential rehab?

Kentucky Medicaid sets a statewide average of 30 days for residential stays under its waiver, a program-wide target rather than a cap on any one person’s stay. Length depends on ASAM Criteria assessments, which Kentucky adopted as its standard for level-of-care decisions, so a plan can authorize more days when the assessment supports them.

Does Kentucky Medicaid need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes. Every Kentucky Medicaid plan must sign off in advance on a residential stay or an inpatient admission; House Bill 695 brought that step back on June 25, 2025 after a pause. Fee-for-service members go through the Department for Medicaid Services prior authorization line, 800-292-2392, instead of a plan.

Does Kentucky Medicaid Cover Detox in Kentucky?

Yes. Kentucky Medicaid covers withdrawal management at every ASAM level: ambulatory detox at 1-WM and 2-WM, clinically managed residential detox at 3.2-WM, and medically monitored or hospital detox at 3.7-WM and Level 4. Kentucky licenses medical detox that takes Medicaid as a withdrawal management category under 908 KAR 1:370.

Does Kentucky Medicaid Cover Outpatient Rehab in Kentucky?

Yes. Kentucky Medicaid covers individual, group and family therapy up to three hours a day, with more allowed when medically necessary, plus intensive outpatient that takes Medicaid, meeting at least three days a week, and partial hospitalization for Medicaid members, usually a four-to-six-week day program. All five plans authorize both of those levels first.

Kentucky Medicaid also pays for peer support from recovery specialists, with annual thresholds that differ by plan: Aetna, Passport and UnitedHealthcare authorize it, while Humana and WellCare do not. Since December 2024 the TEAMKY waiver adds recovery residence support for eligible members living in certified recovery housing after treatment.

Does Kentucky Medicaid Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Kentucky Medicaid covers medications for addiction treatment through MedImpact, the pharmacy benefit manager for both fee-for-service and plan members, whose member line is 800-210-7628. Residential programs paid under the waiver must offer these medications on site or arrange them elsewhere, so a residential stay does not interrupt a prescription.

Does Kentucky Medicaid cover methadone?

Yes. Kentucky Medicaid added methadone to its benefit on July 1, 2019, joining buprenorphine and Vivitrol, which the program already paid for. Methadone clinic programs are licensed in Kentucky as narcotic treatment programs, one category of Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Entity under 908 KAR 1:370.

Does Kentucky Medicaid cover Suboxone?

Yes. Kentucky Medicaid let prescribers skip the prior authorization form for Suboxone-type film and generic tablets from July 1, 2021, within stated criteria, and its June 2024 preferred drug list named Suboxone for Medicaid members as preferred. Vivitrol for Medicaid members and Sublocade were preferred with prior authorization. WellCare alone authorizes medication treatment service codes.

Kentucky Medicaid Rehab Centers Near Lakes, in the Appalachian Mountains and in the Daniel Boone National Forest

Kentucky Medicaid plans enroll members in all 120 counties and none of the five is regional, so a member can pick a lakeside or mountain program without changing plans. The regional piece is crisis care: fourteen Community Mental Health Centers each cover a set of counties, and transport outside a member’s medical service area needs a primary care referral.

Kentucky Medicaid rehab near Lake Cumberland and Kentucky Lake

Kentucky Medicaid members around Lake Cumberland, in Pulaski, Russell and Wayne counties, fall in crisis Region 14, which runs a 24-hour line at (800) 954-4782. Rehab programs near lakes also sit around Kentucky Lake in Marshall and Calloway counties, Region 1, and treatment centers in Somerset serve the Lake Cumberland side.

Kentucky Medicaid rehab in the eastern Kentucky mountains

Kentucky Medicaid covers the coalfield counties of the Cumberland Plateau, where Pine Mountain and Black Mountain rise above Harlan and Letcher counties. Rehab centers near mountains in Pike and Floyd fall in crisis Region 11, while Perry and Letcher are Region 12, and Pikeville rehab centers are listed for the Big Sandy valley.

Kentucky Medicaid rehab in the Daniel Boone National Forest

Kentucky Medicaid members in Rowan, Laurel, Whitley and McCreary counties live along the Daniel Boone National Forest, which runs from Morehead south to the Tennessee line. Programs near national forests around rehab programs in London sit in crisis Region 13, with its own 24-hour line, (606) 526-9552.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Kentucky Medicaid in Kentucky?

Browse the listings on this page, which show only Kentucky programs that take Medicaid. Open a listing for its direct line, the care it runs and its accreditation, or narrow the page by town, service or substance first. Calling a program directly is the quickest way to learn whether it is in the network of the plan on your card.

Kentucky Medicaid members enter a residential bed, hospital unit, day program or intensive outpatient group once their own plan authorizes it, and all five plans need authorization before an out-of-network behavioral health provider can treat a member outside an emergency. The program usually files it; members can also phone their plan.

Kentucky Medicaid rehab in Lexington and the Bluegrass

Kentucky Medicaid members in Fayette County fall in Region 15, the largest crisis region, which stretches across seventeen Bluegrass counties, including Franklin, Madison, Scott and Jessamine, with one line at (800) 928-8000. Can I use Kentucky Medicaid for rehab in a different county?

Yes. Kentucky Medicaid plans cover all 120 counties, so a member in Pike County can be authorized for residential care in Lexington or Louisville under the same plan. A program outside the plan’s network needs prior authorization first. Members can also switch plans at any time, and the change starts the first day of the next month.

How much does rehab cost with Kentucky Medicaid?

Nothing today. Kentucky regulation 907 KAR 1:604 bars the department and every plan from charging copayments anywhere in the program. Specialty-visit copays allowed by federal law from October 1, 2028 exclude mental health and substance use services, and people in treatment are exempt from the work requirement that starts January 1, 2027.

Kentucky Medicaid is one of several ways listed programs are paid. Private insurance, Medicare, sliding scale fees and state-funded care are other routes, and Medicaid residential rehab options are gathered on a separate page. The state applications site, kynect, handles new applications and plan changes at (855) 459-6328.
