Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) in Kentucky

Partial hospitalization programs in Kentucky provide structured addiction treatment during the day. At night, people go home or to a recovery residence. Listings cover the Bluegrass towns around Nicholasville and Lexington, eastern Kentucky communities such as Mount Vernon, Prestonsburg and Ashland, and places in between. About 43 percent of mapped PHP programs are in rural areas and 38 percent are urban.

Listing details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send us. RehabSeekers.com does not rank programs. Compare hours, insurers and services here, then call the admissions team to confirm.

Common questions about PHP

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are PHP programs in Kentucky?

Partial hospitalization listings in Kentucky cluster in Nicholasville, Mount Vernon, Prestonsburg, Louisa and Ashland. Lexington, Meads and London are larger cities nearby, and because this level of care means attending a program for much of the day, travel time from home often shapes which location works.

Rehab Centers in Nicholasvillehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/kentucky/nicholasville/
Is partial hospitalization covered by Kentucky Medicaid?

Kentucky Medicaid appears among the accepted payments at nearly all of the partial hospitalization programs in Kentucky, with behavioral health benefits sitting inside the state's managed care plans, including Passport Health Plan by Molina Healthcare and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan.

Coverage follows the plan a member is enrolled in, and a plan may require authorization before day treatment begins. Intake staff can check network status and whether that step applies.

Rehab Centers in Kentucky That Accept Kentucky Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/kentucky/kentucky-medicaid/
Are there PHP programs near a river in Kentucky?

Rivers lie within 25 miles of nearly all of the partial hospitalization programs in Kentucky, and the nearest one is a median of about 10.4 miles from listed facilities. The most-named rivers are the Dix River, the Chaplin River and the Little Fork Little Sandy River. Day programs run indoors.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What is a partial hospitalization program for substance use in Kentucky?

A partial hospitalization program for substance use is day treatment at ASAM level 2.5. The ASAM Criteria, published by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, describes this level as usually 20 or more hours of clinical services a week. On most weekdays, people attend group therapy, individual counseling, medication management and medical monitoring, then leave in the evening.

Many Kentucky search results for PHP point to hospital psychiatric day programs built for depression, psychosis or eating disorders. Those programs have their own schedules and admission rules, and they are a different service from an addiction PHP. When you call, ask whether the program treats substance use disorders at level 2.5 or offers mental health day care only.

Most Kentucky PHP programs sit close to a river. Our mapping shows 96 percent are within 25 miles of one, at a median distance of 10.4 miles, and the Dix River is the most common nearest river (see rivers near treatment). Blue Grass Airport is the closest airport for about a third of programs, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 27.8 miles.

How is PHP different from IOP and residential treatment?

PHP sits between intensive outpatient and residential care. It has more weekly hours than IOP, but there is no overnight stay.

Level of careTypical hoursNights
IOP (ASAM 2.1)9 or more a week for adultsHome
PHP (ASAM 2.5)20 or more a weekHome or recovery residence
Residential (ASAM 3)Round-the-clock settingAt the program

A clinical assessment decides which level fits best. PHP often suits people who need daily structure and medical oversight but have a safe place to sleep. It can also be a step down after residential care. Intensive outpatient programs in Kentucky or standard outpatient rehab may be enough when daily attendance is not needed. Residential rehab in Kentucky may fit when home is unstable or a return to use keeps happening between sessions.

How many hours a day is PHP, and how long does it last?

Addiction PHPs in Kentucky reach 20 or more hours a week by running several hours a day on most weekdays. The length of a stay comes from assessment, not a fixed number of weeks. Expect the team to review progress regularly and talk with you about stepping down to IOP when the time is right.

Why withdrawal care may come first

Medically managed withdrawal sometimes has to come before day treatment, especially with alcohol, benzodiazepines or heavy opioid use. An assessment shows whether that applies. If it does, detox programs in Kentucky can come first, with PHP following.

Daily schedule, transport and nights

Getting to a program every day takes planning in a state where many PHP programs are rural. Ask intake staff whether rides are offered and when the day starts and ends. Some people stay in a recovery residence during PHP. Since July 1, 2024, Kentucky law has required recovery residences to be certified by a cabinet-approved organization, and the Kentucky Recovery Housing Network does that certification. Sober living in Kentucky lists options.

Will Kentucky Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance cover PHP?

Coverage for addiction PHP in Kentucky depends on your plan, so call your insurer as well as the program. Kentucky Medicaid, run by the Department for Medicaid Services, works through managed care plans: Aetna Better Health of Kentucky, Humana Healthy Horizons in Kentucky, Passport Health Plan by Molina Healthcare, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan and WellCare of Kentucky. Anthem stopped serving Kentucky Medicaid members on January 1, 2025. The 2026 Medicaid behavioral health fee schedule lists daily rates of $135.72 for intensive outpatient and $320.30 for residential treatment. Ask your plan how it handles partial hospitalization for addiction, and see Medicaid-accepting rehab.

Medicare Part B has a partial hospitalization benefit offered through hospital outpatient departments and community mental health centers. Whether a substance use day program qualifies depends on how that program is set up. Medicare rehab in Kentucky shows listings that report Medicare. For private plans, federal parity rules require addiction benefits to be no more restrictive than comparable medical benefits. Prior authorization is still common.

How can you check a program and use these listings?

Kentucky licenses nonhospital alcohol and other drug treatment programs through the Office of Inspector General in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, under 908 KAR 1:370. Ask the program for its license and check it with that office.

Each listing shows insurers accepted, languages and populations served, where the provider supplied them. For co-occurring mental health care, see dual diagnosis rehab in Kentucky. For care in Spanish, see Spanish-speaking rehab. Every level of care is gathered on the Kentucky rehab page.

Support is available by phone at any hour. Call or text 988 for a mental health or substance use crisis. Find Help Now Kentucky, 800-854-6813, tracks treatment openings and recovery housing. In eastern Kentucky, the Operation UNITE line is 866-908-6483.
