What does MAT rehab near mountains mean?

It means a treatment program located in or near mountain terrain that uses an FDA-approved medication alongside counseling. For opioid use disorder that medication is buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone; for alcohol use disorder it is acamprosate, disulfiram or naltrexone, prescribed with therapy and medical monitoring.

The mountain setting mainly changes travel and weather, not the medication plan. Programs in mountain counties commonly pair a residential stay with outpatient medication visits afterward.

Which medications are used for opioid addiction?

The FDA has approved three medications for opioid use disorder: buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone. Buprenorphine comes as Suboxone film, Zubsolv tablets, generic sublingual or buccal forms, and the Brixadi and Sublocade extended-release injections. Naltrexone for opioid use disorder is Vivitrol, injected into muscle.

Can you get methadone at a mountain rehab?

Yes, but only if the program is a SAMHSA-certified opioid treatment program or arranges dosing at one. SAMHSA states methadone for opioid use disorder can be dispensed only through a certified opioid treatment program, so a rehab without that certification coordinates daily visits elsewhere.

Methadone is a Schedule II long-acting full opioid agonist taken daily as liquid, powder or diskettes, which is why dosing visits are structured that way.

Can a rehab prescribe Suboxone?

Yes. Buprenorphine was the first opioid use disorder medication that could be prescribed or dispensed in physician offices, and it is also given at SAMHSA-certified opioid treatment programs. That means a mountain program with a prescriber on staff or under contract can start and continue it without a separate clinic trip.

Treatment length is tailored to each patient and, SAMHSA notes, can in some cases continue indefinitely.

How long do I have to wait to start Suboxone?

At least 12 to 24 hours after your last opioid use, and you must already be in early withdrawal. Starting buprenorphine too soon can bring on sudden, severe withdrawal, so clinicians time the first dose by symptoms rather than the clock alone.

Once stable, SAMHSA says some patients can move from daily dosing to alternate-day dosing.

How soon after last opioid use can I start Vivitrol?

Wait at least 7 days after short-acting opioids and 10 to 14 days after long-acting opioids before starting naltrexone for opioid use disorder. Naltrexone blocks opioid receptors, so starting it while opioids remain in the body can trigger abrupt withdrawal.

Extended-release naltrexone is injected by a practitioner every four weeks, and any practitioner licensed to prescribe medications can administer it.

How long does MAT treatment last?

Methadone treatment should last a minimum of 12 months, SAMHSA says, citing NIDA, and some patients need long-term maintenance. Buprenorphine length is tailored to the individual and can in some cases be indefinite. Naltrexone for alcohol use disorder typically runs three to four months.
