Court Ordered Rehab Centers in Montana

Court ordered rehab in Montana usually starts in one of a few places: a sentencing or probation condition, a DUI case, a treatment court docket, or a civil petition filed in district court. Each route has its own rules, and the judge, defense attorney or supervising officer sets the specific terms for each person.

Montana programs listed here say they work with clients who have court involvement. The listings draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and details supplied by the providers themselves. About half sit in towns and half in rural settings, at a median elevation of 3,250 feet, with Billings, Helena and Great Falls appearing most often.

Other parts of Montana, and what each is near.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions about Court Ordered Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Montana cities have court ordered rehabs?

Billings comes first among the places where court ordered rehab listings in Montana cluster, followed by Helena, Great Falls, Sidney and Livingston. Programs in these places take clients sent by a court, probation officer or drug court team, and each order sets its own requirements.

Bozeman, along with Billings and Helena, is among the larger cities nearby, which can matter when a court order allows treatment outside a person's home county or district.

Rehab Centers in Billingshttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/montana/billings/
Do court ordered rehab programs in Montana accept Medicaid?

Montana Medicaid, paid fee-for-service rather than through managed care plans, is accepted by nearly all of the court ordered rehab programs in Montana. Members are usually enrolled in Passport to Health, a primary care case management program. Intake staff can confirm coverage before a first court-required session.

Rehab Centers in Montana That Accept Montana Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/montana/montana-medicaid/
Are there court ordered rehabs near a river in Montana?

Within 25 miles of a river sit most of the court ordered rehab programs in Montana, with a median of about 6.4 miles from listed facilities to the nearest river.

The most-named waterways are the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River, the Sun River and the Yellowstone River. For someone completing a court order, a river is part of the local geography, not a treatment feature of the program.

How does a court order someone into treatment in Montana?

Montana courts order someone into treatment through criminal cases, treatment courts, DUI sentencing and a separate civil commitment process. In a criminal case, treatment can be written into a sentence, a probation condition or a pretrial agreement, and the terms depend on the court and the charge.

The Montana Supreme Court’s Office of Court Administrator coordinates drug courts through a Statewide Drug Court Coordinator. Its January 2025 report lists 36 drug courts across district, municipal and justice courts, plus 8 Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts, each with its own team and requirements.

Every DUI defendant in Montana must complete a chemical dependency assessment through the state’s Assessment, Course and Treatment program, which a licensed addiction counselor carries out. A first offense adds an education course, and treatment is required for second and later offenses.

Civil commitment runs separately from any criminal case. A district court can hear a petition from a spouse, relative, guardian, physician or the head of a treatment facility, and may commit a person for 40 days, with up to two 90-day recommitments after that. Because the law names only alcohol, families concerned about other drugs should check with an attorney about which process fits.

DUI cases and the ACT program

Every Montana DUI defendant must complete a chemical dependency assessment under the ACT program (Assessment, Course and Treatment), set out in 61-8-1009 MCA. The assessment takes place at a program approved by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) and staffed by a licensed addiction counselor. A first offense adds an education course called Prime For Life, and treatment is required for second and later offenses. Assessment and education options appear under DUI programs in Montana.

Civil involuntary commitment

Civil commitment in Montana runs separately from any criminal case. Under 53-24-302 MCA, a spouse, guardian, relative, physician or treatment facility chief can petition a district court, which may commit a person for 40 days, followed by up to two 90-day recommitments. The statute names alcohol only, so families concerned about other drugs should ask an attorney which process applies.

Will a Montana court accept any licensed treatment program?

A Montana court may not accept every licensed program, because the judge, probation officer or treatment court team sets the requirement. Montana has two layers of oversight. The DPHHS Office of Inspector General licenses substance use disorder facilities, and the Treatment Bureau within the Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Division (BHDD) grants state approval to treatment programs under 53-24-208 MCA. DPHHS publishes a list of state-approved providers. Ask for the court’s requirement in writing before enrolling. RehabSeekers.com cannot say whether a court will accept a particular program.

Progress reports to a court require your written consent. Federal confidentiality rules for substance use treatment records, known as 42 CFR Part 2, generally bar a program from sharing attendance or progress with a judge or probation officer unless you sign a consent naming who receives the information and what it covers. Ask intake staff whether they send reports, how often, and in what format the court expects them.

Recovery housing in Montana has its own rule. Under 53-24-314 MCA, judges may not refer people to uncertified recovery residences, and referrals must include at least one residence that supports medication for substance use disorder. Homes that state a certification can be compared under sober living in Montana.

What levels of care can a Montana court require?

A Montana treatment order usually calls for an assessment first, then a level of care and sometimes a minimum length based on what the assessment recommends. The table below shows how common order language maps to the levels of care in the listings.

Level of careWhat an order may say
DetoxSupervised withdrawal before further care; withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines and some other drugs can be medically serious
ResidentialLive-in treatment for a set number of days
Intensive outpatientSeveral sessions a week while living at home
OutpatientRegular counseling, often after a higher level of care

Medication for opioid use disorder is part of Montana’s recovery housing law, which requires court referrals to include a residence that supports medication. Individual drug court policies on medication can differ, so ask the treatment court coordinator or your attorney before starting or stopping any prescription. Prescribers are listed under Suboxone clinics in Montana.

How do you pay for court-ordered treatment in Montana?

Court-ordered treatment in Montana can be paid through Medicaid, private insurance, public funding or a sliding fee, and who pays depends on the court and the program. Montana Medicaid expanded on January 1, 2016, through the HELP Program, and covers substance use treatment for eligible adults. The state’s HEART waiver lets Medicaid pay for short-term residential stays in larger treatment settings, along with reentry services. Programs that take it appear under Medicaid-accepting rehab.

BHDD administers Montana’s federal block grant for treatment, which supports care for people with limited coverage. Publicly funded options are gathered under state-funded rehab in Montana, and income-based fees under sliding scale rehab in Montana.

What happens if you miss sessions on a Montana treatment order?

The judge decides what happens after missed sessions, and the response varies by case, court and charge. A program reporting under your signed consent may pass attendance gaps to the court or supervising officer. Before missing a session for work, illness or travel, call your attorney or officer and ask how to document the reason.

Distance is worth weighing when sessions are frequent. Among Montana programs on this page, 76 percent sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 4.5 miles, with Billings Logan International nearest for about one in four. Each listing also shows accreditation, languages and populations served where providers supply them.

No state substance use helpline was found on DPHHS pages. For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988, and for treatment referrals, the national treatment referral line is open around the clock. Wider options sit on the Montana rehab page and the national court-ordered rehab guide.
