Opioid, Fentanyl and Heroin Rehab Centers in Idaho

Opioid treatment in Idaho comes through opioid treatment programs that dispense methadone, clinicians who prescribe buprenorphine in an office or by video, and detox, residential and outpatient programs that may continue medication. Listings for opioid, fentanyl and heroin use cluster in Garden City, Pocatello, Caldwell, Meridian, Coeur d’Alene and Nampa, and 81% sit in towns rather than rural areas.

Details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers supply themselves. Use the filters for medication, level of care, payment and language, then call to ask about current intake. Every kind of care in the state is on the Idaho locations page.

Common questions about Opioid Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are opioid rehabs in Idaho?

Start by looking at the cities where Idaho opioid rehab listings cluster: Garden City, Pocatello, Caldwell, Meridian and Coeur d'Alene. Boise, Idaho Falls and Pocatello are the bigger cities in the picture, so searches can also begin from those larger hubs when travel, family or work ties point that way.

Rehab Centers in Garden Cityhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/idaho/garden-city-id/
Can I use Idaho Medicaid for opioid rehab?

Nearly all of the opioid rehabs in Idaho record accepting Idaho Medicaid. For Medicaid members, mental health and substance use disorder services are managed by Magellan of Idaho through the Idaho Behavioral Health Plan, a carve-out that also covers other Idaho residents.

Molina Healthcare of Idaho and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Idaho serve only people enrolled in both Medicaid and Medicare, through Idaho Medicaid Plus and the Medicare Medicaid Coordinated Plan.

Rehab Centers in Idaho That Accept Idaho Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/idaho/idaho-medicaid/
Are there opioid rehabs near a river in Idaho?

Most of the opioid rehabs in Idaho sit within 25 miles of a river, at a median of about 9.5 miles from the nearest one. Council Spring Creek, Currant Creek and the Portneuf River are the names that come up in listings. Distances start at each listing, so the closest river differs by program.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What medications treat opioid use disorder in Idaho?

Three medications treat opioid use disorder in Idaho: methadone, buprenorphine and extended-release naltrexone. Each listing shows which of the three a program reports offering, and the right choice is one to work out with a prescriber.

Federal rules in Part 8 of Title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations limit methadone for this purpose to certified opioid treatment programs. Buprenorphine can come from those programs or from an office-based prescriber, and since the federal waiver ended, any clinician with a standard registration to prescribe controlled substances may offer it.

Extended-release naltrexone is a monthly injection that blocks opioids. Unlike the other two medications, it does not ease withdrawal and can only begin once withdrawal is over and opioids have cleared the body, so the timing of a first dose needs careful planning.

Anyone uninsured or on Medicaid can phone Magellan of Idaho around the clock at 1-855-202-0973 to ask about an intake. Fentanyl in the street supply can make a buprenorphine start harder to time, which is one reason to ask about a supervised start.

MedicationWhere Idahoans get itWhen it can start
MethadoneOpioid treatment program onlyAfter an intake exam, while still dependent on opioids
BuprenorphineOpioid treatment program, office-based prescriber or telehealth clinicOnce withdrawal has begun, as the prescriber directs
Extended-release naltrexonePrescriber’s office or clinic, by injectionAfter withdrawal is complete and opioids have cleared

How do I start methadone or buprenorphine treatment in Idaho?

To start methadone, call an opioid treatment program and ask for an intake appointment; for buprenorphine you can also ask your own doctor, an addiction specialist or a telehealth prescriber. Intake at an opioid treatment program usually involves a medical exam, a drug test and an assessment before the first dose. Since the federal X-waiver ended, clinicians with a standard DEA registration can prescribe buprenorphine, though not every Idaho practice chooses to. Compare methadone clinics in Idaho with Suboxone and buprenorphine clinics. People on Medicaid or without insurance can call Magellan of Idaho’s 24-hour line, 1-855-202-0973, which the Department of Health and Welfare lists for substance use treatment.

Can I start buprenorphine by telehealth in Idaho?

Idaho Code 54-5707 allows prescribing through virtual care within an established provider-patient relationship, and allows controlled substances such as buprenorphine only when prescribed in line with federal law. Federal telehealth rules for buprenorphine have shifted several times, so ask whether a first visit can happen by video. The Idaho Behavioral Health Plan pays the same rate for video assessments and counseling as for office visits. Telehealth programs in Idaho are listed separately.

What kinds of opioid treatment programs are available in Idaho?

Opioid care in Idaho spans opioid treatment programs, withdrawal management, residential stays, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, standard outpatient and telehealth. Fentanyl is common in the street drug supply, and withdrawal and a buprenorphine start can be harder to time with it, which is a reason to ask about medically managed withdrawal or a supervised medication start. Detox programs in Idaho manage withdrawal but are not a full course of treatment, so plan the next step, such as medication or intensive outpatient care, before discharge.

Idaho’s opioid programs mostly sit in river country: 78% are within 25 miles of a river or creek, a median of 9.5 miles away, most often Council Spring Creek, Currant Creek or the Portneuf River. Boise Air Terminal is the nearest major airport for more listings than any other, and the median distance to the closest airport is 9.6 miles, worth knowing for anyone traveling from rural and frontier counties, where fewer local programs exist. Median elevation is 2,720 feet.

Do residential programs in Idaho accept people taking methadone or buprenorphine?

Some residential programs in Idaho continue methadone or buprenorphine and some do not, so ask the admissions team before you arrive. Good questions: will staff keep your current dose, coordinate dosing with your opioid treatment program, or start buprenorphine on site?

How is opioid treatment handled during pregnancy?

Programs funded by the federal substance use block grant must give pregnant women preference for admission, with interim services within 48 hours when no space is open, under 45 CFR 96.131. Idaho’s own rule sets priority groups each year without naming them, so mention pregnancy on the first call. Stopping opioids suddenly during pregnancy carries risks, and methadone and buprenorphine can both be continued under medical care; see rehab for pregnant women in Idaho.

Does Idaho Medicaid pay for opioid treatment medications?

Idaho Medicaid, run by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and expanded in January 2020, covers substance use disorder services, with behavioral health care managed by Magellan of Idaho under the Idaho Behavioral Health Plan. Ask the prescriber or Magellan how methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone are each billed, since clinic dosing and pharmacy fills follow different rules. Programs that take Medicaid show it on their listing.

Idahoans without coverage can ask Magellan about the Division of Behavioral Health’s SUD Services Program, paid for by a federal block grant, and the Idaho State Opioid Response grant, which funds medication treatment and recovery support. Medicare covers services at enrolled opioid treatment programs; see Medicare rehab in Idaho and state-funded rehab in Idaho.

Where can I get naloxone in Idaho?

Idaho pharmacies have sold naloxone without a prescription since 2019, and Idaho Medicaid members can get it at no cost. The Department of Health and Welfare also gives free naloxone to community organizations, so local groups may have kits to hand out.

Tolerance falls quickly after detox, a residential stay, jail or any break from opioids, so a once-usual amount can cause an overdose. Keep naloxone close, avoid using alone and let someone know your plans. If a person will not wake or is not breathing, call 911 and give naloxone. Idaho’s Good Samaritan law, Idaho Code 37-2739C, added in 2018, gives some protection from possession charges to people who get medical help for a drug-related overdose. More on medication and treatment choices is on the national opioid addiction page.
