Residential Rehab Centers in Kentucky

Residential rehab in Kentucky means living at a treatment program around the clock while you take part in counseling, groups and a structured daily routine for substance use. Programs on this page are listed from Louisville and Elizabethtown to Hopkinsville in the west and Morehead, Olive Hill and Ashland in the eastern hills.

Kentucky’s residential options lean rural. About 44 percent sit in rural areas, 32 percent in cities and the rest in small towns. Listing details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and what providers report about themselves.

Other parts of Kentucky, and what each is near.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions about Residential Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Kentucky cities have residential rehabs?

Kentucky's residential rehab listings cluster in Louisville, Morehead, Olive Hill, Hopkinsville and Elizabethtown, in that order. Louisville and Morehead are also among the larger nearby cities, alongside Lexington. When comparing towns, travel time from home and who will come by during the stay are practical points to raise with intake staff.

Residential Rehab Centers in Louisvillehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/kentucky/louisville-ky/residential-rehab-louisville/
Do residential rehabs in Kentucky accept Medicaid?

Aetna Better Health of Kentucky, Humana Healthy Horizons in Kentucky and WellCare of Kentucky are among the plans that deliver Kentucky Medicaid, and most of the residential rehabs in Kentucky record accepting it. Coverage runs through whichever plan a member is enrolled in, so confirming the plan name with the admissions team avoids surprises.

Rehab Centers in Kentucky That Accept Kentucky Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/kentucky/kentucky-medicaid/
Are there residential rehabs near a river in Kentucky?

A river runs within 25 miles of nearly all of the residential rehabs in Kentucky, with a median of about 11.6 miles from listed facilities to the nearest river. The Salt River, the Dix River and the Middle Fork Little Sandy River are named.

Distances are measured from each listed facility, not from town centers. Anyone weighing setting can ask intake staff whether outdoor time is part of the daily schedule.

What is residential treatment for substance use in Kentucky?

Residential treatment is live-in care where you sleep at the program and follow a structured 24-hour schedule of therapy, groups and supervised routines. The ASAM Criteria, published by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, call residential care Level 3. The criteria split it into sub-levels: 3.1 for lower-intensity, clinically managed settings, 3.5 for high-intensity, clinically managed programs, and 3.7 for medically managed care with nursing and physician coverage. Those numbers describe service intensity. They are not a certification. Kentucky listings often use “inpatient” and “residential” loosely. Hospital-based and medically managed stays appear under inpatient rehab in Kentucky, and the national guide to residential programs explains the model in more depth.

Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be medically dangerous and needs a medical assessment before or at admission. Some Kentucky programs list on-site withdrawal management, while others expect you to arrive after detox. The Kentucky detox page shows where withdrawal care is listed. For a medical emergency, call 911. For a mental health or suicidal crisis, call or text 988.

Kentucky’s residential programs follow its waterways. Ninety-seven percent sit within 25 miles of a named river, most often the Salt River, at a median of 11.6 miles. Blue Grass Airport in Lexington is the nearest airport for about a quarter of programs, ahead of Louisville Muhammad Ali International, and the median airport distance is 32.7 miles. Around Louisville, the reach of listed programs crosses the Ohio River to Jeffersonville, Clarksville and New Albany in Indiana.

How are residential programs licensed in Kentucky, and how can I look one up?

The Office of Inspector General in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services licenses nonhospital alcohol and other drug treatment entities, known as AODE licenses, under 908 KAR 1:370. Ask the admissions team for the program’s license number and the levels of care it is licensed to provide. You can then contact the Office of Inspector General to ask about that license.

National accreditation is separate from a state license. Listings show accreditation where a provider reports it. The Division of Substance Use Disorder, part of the Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities (DBHDID), leads substance use services statewide.

Does Kentucky Medicaid or private insurance pay for residential treatment?

Kentucky Medicaid pays for residential substance use treatment through five managed care plans:

  • Aetna Better Health of Kentucky
  • Humana Healthy Horizons in Kentucky
  • Passport Health Plan by Molina Healthcare
  • UnitedHealthcare Community Plan
  • WellCare of Kentucky

Anthem stopped being a Kentucky Medicaid plan on January 1, 2025. Prior authorization rules and stay limits are set by each plan, so call the member services number on your card before admission. More on how Medicaid-accepting programs work is on the national page.

The Department for Medicaid Services publishes the daily rates it pays providers. These rates are not what a member owes. The 2026 behavioral health fee schedule lists:

Service (code)Medicaid rate per day
Alcohol and/or drug treatment, ASAM 3.7 (H2036)$408.24
Residential treatment program (H0011)$320.30
Residential treatment program (H2034)$271.44
Intensive outpatient program (H0015)$135.72

Private insurance, Medicare and TRICARE appear on many Kentucky listings.

Options without insurance

Uninsured Kentuckians can reach publicly funded treatment through community providers. DBHDID’s Adult Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Services Branch oversees state and federal funds for these providers. Find Help Now Kentucky, 800-854-6813, lists treatment openings and recovery housing. The Operation UNITE Treatment Referral and Help Line, 866-908-6483, serves eastern Kentucky. Kentucky law gives people with HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C priority access to licensed treatment, and pregnant women can ask about admission preference in federally funded programs. Programs that list public funding are gathered under state-funded rehab in Kentucky.

How long do residential programs in Kentucky usually last?

Residential stays in Kentucky range from a few weeks to several months, depending on program design and your assessment. Some listings describe stays of around a month, shown on the 30-day rehab page. Others describe stays of several months, listed under long-term rehab in Kentucky. Length reflects a program’s model and your clinical needs, not a measure of results.

Listings also note gender, age groups and languages. Kentucky law (KRS 214.185) lets a minor consent to substance use treatment by a physician without a parent’s consent. Programs serving adolescents are on the Kentucky teen rehab page.

Questions to ask before admission

Questions worth asking intake staff:

  • Who is on site overnight, and is a nurse or physician on call?
  • Does the program start or continue buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone for opioid use disorder?
  • What are the phone, visiting and family contact rules?

What happens after a residential stay ends?

Most people leave residential care with a step-down plan to a lower level of care. Options include a partial hospitalization program, an intensive outpatient program or recovery housing.

Kentucky has required certification of recovery residences since July 1, 2024, under KRS 222.502. Anyone who runs or advertises one must be certified by a cabinet-approved organization. The Kentucky Recovery Housing Network certifies residences against national NARR standards, so ask any house for its certification.
