Rehab Centers in Massachusetts That Accept Medicare

Medicare can pay for drug and alcohol treatment in Massachusetts, but only for certain services and only through providers enrolled in Medicare. The programs on this page report that they accept Medicare. Their details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and information the providers send us. Ask each program about its coverage before you count on it.

Massachusetts programs that list Medicare cluster around Worcester, Roxbury Crossing, Springfield, Pittsfield, Fall River and Lowell. About 64 percent sit in towns rather than dense city cores. Nearly all are within 25 miles of a river, a median of 2.2 miles away, and the Muddy River is the most common.

Common questions about Medicare Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Massachusetts cities have Medicare rehabs?

Worcester leads the Massachusetts cities where addiction programs accepting Medicare cluster, followed by Roxbury Crossing, Springfield, Pittsfield and Fall River. Boston and Lowell are the large cities near much of this care. Because Medicare covers different services in different ways, asking each program which parts of Medicare it bills is a practical first step.

Rehab Centers in Worcesterhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/worcester/
Do Medicare rehabs in Massachusetts take MassHealth?

Ask the admissions team to check Medicare and MassHealth enrollment together before admission. Nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in Massachusetts also record accepting MassHealth, so dual coverage is commonly recognized.

People enrolled in Medicare and MassHealth at the same time, often called dual eligibles, may find MassHealth picks up costs Medicare leaves behind. Coverage details still depend on the plan a member holds, so confirming them with the provider is sensible.

Rehab Centers in Massachusetts That Accept MassHealthhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/masshealth/
Are there Medicare rehabs near a river in Massachusetts?

Rivers are within 25 miles of nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in Massachusetts, and the nearest river sits a median of about 2.2 miles from listed facilities.

Muddy River, Middle River and Westfield River are the rivers named for these rehabs. Intake staff can describe the surroundings of a particular location before admission, including how close the water is.

Does Medicare pay for addiction treatment in Massachusetts?

Yes, Medicare pays for addiction treatment in Massachusetts when the care is medically necessary and the provider is enrolled in Medicare. Coverage depends on the type of care, so a hospital withdrawal stay, weekly counseling and a buprenorphine prescription are each billed under a different part.

Since 2024, licensed mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists can enroll as Medicare providers, so more Massachusetts clinicians can bill Medicare for therapy. Medicare members include adults 65 and older, along with younger people who qualify through disability benefits or end-stage renal disease, and some of them have MassHealth as well.

Part A covers hospital and psychiatric hospital stays, including medically managed withdrawal; Part B covers outpatient therapy, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care and opioid treatment program services; and Part D covers prescriptions such as buprenorphine and naltrexone. Stays at nonhospital residential programs and sober living usually fall outside Original Medicare.

People enrolled in both Medicare and MassHealth may have residential rehabilitation and short acute stays covered through MassHealth instead. Medicare Advantage plans cover at least what Original Medicare does but use networks and may need prior authorization, so check with the plan that a program belongs to its network before admission.

Which parts of Medicare cover detox, outpatient care and medications?

Part A, Part B and Part D each cover a different part of substance use care. The 2026 amounts below are from Medicare.gov.

PartWhat it pays for2026 cost to you
Part AInpatient hospital and psychiatric hospital stays, including medically managed withdrawal$1,736 deductible per benefit period
Part BOutpatient therapy, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, opioid treatment program services including methadone$283 yearly deductible, then coinsurance on most services
Part DPrescriptions such as buprenorphine and naltrexone$2,100 yearly out-of-pocket cap

Opioid treatment programs have been covered under Part B since 2020, and a separate intensive outpatient benefit began in 2024. Massachusetts programs on this page list withdrawal management, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, methadone treatment, buprenorphine prescribing and co-occurring mental health care. Ask each program which of these services it bills to Medicare.

Does Medicare cover residential rehab, and what are the options if it does not?

Original Medicare generally does not pay for residential rehab outside a hospital, and it does not pay for sober living. Massachusetts residential programs that are not part of a hospital usually rely on other payment sources. People enrolled in both Medicare and MassHealth, called dual eligibles, may have residential rehabilitation, acute treatment services and clinical stabilization services covered through MassHealth. Under Chapter 258 of the Acts of 2014, MassHealth covers acute treatment and clinical stabilization without prior authorization. Medicare Savings Programs can help people with limited income pay Medicare premiums and cost sharing. Programs that take MassHealth appear among Medicaid-accepting listings.

Massachusetts residents who do not qualify for MassHealth have other options. One is state-funded treatment supported by the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services. Another is sliding fee programs, which set charges by income.

How do Medicare Advantage plans in Massachusetts handle substance use treatment?

Medicare Advantage plans in Massachusetts cover at least what Original Medicare covers, but they use provider networks and may require prior authorization for higher levels of care. A program that accepts Original Medicare can still be outside a particular Advantage plan’s network. Before admission, call the number on your plan card and ask whether the program is in network. The state rule that waives prior authorization for acute treatment applies to MassHealth, the Group Insurance Commission and state-regulated insurers. Advantage members should ask their plan how its own approval rules work.

Medicare members can receive substance use counseling by telehealth at home. Several Massachusetts programs list telehealth options, which can help people who live far from a clinic.

Where can people on Medicare in Massachusetts get free help comparing coverage?

Free Medicare counseling in Massachusetts is available through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE with coverage questions at any hour. For treatment referrals, the Massachusetts Substance Use Helpline is at 800-327-5050 (call, or text HOPE), and the national treatment referral line answers around the clock. Call or text 988 for crisis support.

What to ask a program before admission

Ask each program four questions before admission:

  • Is the program enrolled in Medicare?
  • Which of its services does it bill to Medicare?
  • What will your deductible and coinsurance be?
  • Can visits happen by video or phone?

Most Massachusetts programs that list Medicare are easy to reach by air. About 92 percent are within 30 miles of an airport, a median of 11.9 miles away. For about half, the nearest airport is a major one, most often Boston Logan International.

A Medicare label on RehabSeekers.com means the program says it accepts Medicare. Our listings draw on public treatment registers, licensing files, accreditor directories and details the providers supply. For how Medicare works across the country, see Medicare and addiction treatment, or browse all Massachusetts treatment listings.
