Rehab Centers in Montana That Accept Medicare

People on Medicare in Montana can use it for several kinds of substance use treatment, though not for every program that calls itself rehab. The programs listed on this page report that they accept Medicare. Most sit in town settings rather than cities: 57 percent are in towns and 43 percent are rural, and Billings, Great Falls, Helena and Bozeman appear most often.

Listing details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers supply themselves. A listing that reports Medicare is a starting point. Before planning a stay, ask the admissions team whether the program is enrolled in Medicare.

Common questions about Medicare Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Montana cities have Medicare rehabs?

Billings is where Medicare-accepting rehab listings in Montana cluster first, followed by Great Falls, Orchard Homes, Helena and Bozeman. Those communities hold the largest share of providers in the state that record taking Medicare for addiction treatment.

Bozeman, Billings and Great Falls are the bigger cities near these clusters, so people in smaller Montana towns may plan around reaching one of them. Asking intake staff about appointment times makes travel easier to plan.

Rehab Centers in Billingshttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/montana/billings/
Do Medicare rehabs in Montana take Montana Medicaid?

Montana residents who hold both Medicare and Montana Medicaid can usually find a program that takes both, because nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in Montana also record accepting Montana Medicaid. Medicare normally pays first and Medicaid may cover remaining costs, so confirm both with the admissions team.

Rehab Centers in Montana That Accept Montana Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/montana/montana-medicaid/
Are there Medicare rehabs near the mountains in Montana?

About half of the rehabs that take Medicare in Montana sit within 25 miles of a mountain feature, with a median of about 13.1 miles from listed facilities to the nearest one. The Bridger Range, Spokane Hills and Blue Mountain are the most-named features.

Distance to a range varies widely by town, so asking a provider about its surroundings gives a clearer sense of how close the mountains are to a given program.

Rehab Centers Near Mountainshttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/mountains/

Does Medicare pay for addiction treatment in Montana?

Yes, Medicare pays for many substance use disorder services in Montana when the care is medically necessary and comes from a Medicare-enrolled provider. A Montana program can bill Medicare only if the program or its clinicians have enrolled.

Since 2024, licensed counselors and marriage and family therapists can enroll as Medicare providers. That change widened the number of outpatient practices in places like Helena and Great Falls that may be able to bill for therapy, and telehealth visits from home are covered too, which matters given Montana’s long distances.

Medicare is not limited to adults 65 and older. Montanans under 65 can also be enrolled if they have received Social Security Disability Insurance for 24 months or have end-stage renal disease, and many people in that group also qualify for Montana Medicaid, known as dual eligibility.

Residential rehab outside a hospital and sober living generally fall outside Medicare, so stays at many residential programs need another payer. For people with both programs, Montana Medicaid can step in, and a state Medicaid waiver lets it pay for short-term residential stays in larger treatment settings that Medicare leaves out.

Which parts of Medicare cover detox, outpatient care and medications?

Each part of Medicare covers a different piece of substance use care, and each part has its own costs.

PartWhat it coversCosts and limits
Part AInpatient hospital stays, including medically managed withdrawal in a hospital and care in a psychiatric hospitalBenefit-period deductible; 190-day lifetime limit in freestanding psychiatric hospitals
Part BOutpatient therapy, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and opioid treatment program services including methadoneYearly deductible, then usually 20 percent coinsurance
Part DPrescriptions such as buprenorphine and naltrexonePlan premiums and copays, with a yearly cap on out-of-pocket drug costs

Medicare sets new deductible and premium amounts each year. 1-800-MEDICARE can give the figures for the year you plan to start care.

Montana programs that list Medicare report a range of services:

Some listings also report care for co-occurring mental health conditions.

Does Medicare cover residential rehab, and what are the options if it does not?

Medicare generally does not pay for residential rehab outside a hospital, and it does not pay for sober living. This is the biggest gap between what many people expect and what Medicare covers. Stays at the residential programs listed in Montana often need another way to pay.

Montana Medicaid is the main alternative for people who are dual eligible. Montana Medicaid is run as a fee-for-service program, and most members are enrolled in Passport to Health, a primary care case management program. Under the state’s HEART waiver, Medicaid can pay for short-term residential substance use stays in larger treatment settings that Medicare leaves out. The Medicaid listings show programs that report accepting it.

Medicare Savings Programs are another form of help. They are run through Montana Medicaid and can pay Part B premiums, and for some people, deductibles and coinsurance.

People without Medicaid can look at state-funded treatment. The Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Division approves and funds these programs. Some providers also offer sliding fee rates based on income.

How do Medicare Advantage plans in Montana handle substance use treatment?

Medicare Advantage plans in Montana must cover the same substance use services as Original Medicare, but they usually limit care to a provider network. They may also require prior authorization before a hospital stay, partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient care. Original Medicare works differently: any enrolled provider can bill it, with no network. A program that takes Original Medicare may still be outside a particular Advantage plan’s network, so call the plan before admission.

Before admission, ask the program and your plan these questions:

  • Is the program enrolled in Medicare?
  • Is it in your plan’s network, if you have Medicare Advantage?
  • Which services will be billed to Medicare?
  • What will your out-of-pocket costs be?
  • Can counseling or medication visits happen by telehealth?

Telehealth can matter a great deal in Montana, because distances are long and many programs are rural. Medicare covers telehealth for substance use treatment, including visits from home.

Here is where listed programs sit:

  • About three in four are within 25 miles of a river, at a median of 6.6 miles. The Clarks Fork Yellowstone River is the most common.
  • The nearest airport is a median of 4.1 miles away, most often Billings Logan International or Great Falls International.
  • The median elevation is 3,330 feet, and the Bridger Range is the most frequent nearby summit range.

Where can people on Medicare in Montana get free help comparing coverage?

Montana’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, known as SHIP, offers free, unbiased counseling on Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Part D plans. You can reach a local SHIP counselor through the state’s Area Agencies on Aging or by asking 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

Other free lines are open at any hour:

  • The national treatment referral line, 1-800-662-4357, gives referrals to treatment.
  • 988 connects callers with crisis support by phone or text.

To compare listings, start from the Montana treatment overview. Treat each Medicare note as something to ask about, not a promise of coverage. For a broader look at how the program works, see the national Medicare guide.
