State Funded Rehab Centers in Georgia

State-funded rehab in Georgia is substance use treatment paid for, in whole or in part, with public money that the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) passes to contracted providers. The money is meant for residents without insurance, or with coverage that leaves treatment out.

Programs on this page report state-funded or other public payment. Across Georgia, a quarter of them sit in urban areas, about half in towns and the rest in rural settings. The sections below cover how the funding works, who qualifies, how to get in, and when Georgia Medicaid may be the better first call.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions about State Funded Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are state-funded rehabs in Georgia?

Ask first about providers in Gainesville, Statesboro, Covington, Albany and Thunderbolt. Listings for state-funded rehab in Georgia cluster in these places, so they are a practical first set of calls for anyone comparing programs across the state.

Atlanta, Athens and Savannah are larger cities near those clusters. People in these metro areas can widen their search to include them, and intake staff can say whether a program serves their county.

Rehab Centers in Gainesvillehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/gainesville/
Is state-funded rehab covered by Georgia Medicaid?

Most of the state-funded rehabs in Georgia record accepting Georgia Medicaid, and coverage then runs through the plan a Georgia Medicaid member is enrolled in. An undated state page names Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan as the Georgia Families care management organizations.

Rehab Centers in Georgia That Accept Georgia Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/georgia-medicaid/
Are there state-funded rehabs near a river in Georgia?

Most of the state-funded rehabs in Georgia have a river within 25 miles, and the median distance to the nearest one is about 13.9 miles from listed facilities.

The most-named rivers near these programs are the Dog River, the Yellow River and the Little Mulberry River. Distances are measured from each facility, so a specific site may be closer or farther than the median.

How does state-funded addiction treatment work in Georgia?

State-funded addiction treatment in Georgia runs through the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, a stand-alone state department that contracts with providers in six state regions. The contracts are paid for by state funds and by the federal Substance Use Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Services Block Grant, which the department administers.

The department has published its 2026-2027 Behavioral Health Plan for that grant, and an older fact sheet places addiction services in its Division of Addictive Diseases, though that office name may have changed. Opioid work also draws on a federal State Opioid Response grant and on settlement money in the Georgia Opioid Crisis Abatement Trust, limited to uses such as treatment, prevention and harm reduction.

Public and private programs in Georgia follow the same licensing rules. Since January 1, 2026, the department has licensed Drug Abuse Treatment and Education Programs and Narcotic Treatment Programs, a job House Bill 584 moved over from the Department of Community Health. A state contract changes who pays for care, not the standard a program is licensed under.

Funded places are limited, so a waitlist is possible, and federal rules give pregnant people and people who inject drugs preference at admission. The Georgia Crisis and Access Line, 1-800-715-4225, is the main way in. More on public payment in general is on the state-funded treatment page.

Levels of care and where Georgia programs sit

Each Georgia listing shows the levels of care the provider reports. These can include withdrawal management through detox programs, residential rehab, outpatient care and opioid treatment programs such as methadone clinics.

About 76% of publicly funded programs sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the Dog River, at a median distance of 13.9 miles. DeKalb Peachtree Airport is the nearest airport for about a third of them, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 27.8 miles. Stone Mountain is the named summit that appears most often within 25 miles. Elevations run from 20 to 1,890 feet, with a median of 760. Gainesville, Statesboro and Covington are among the towns that appear most often in these listings.

Who qualifies, and how do I apply in Georgia?

State-funded treatment in Georgia mainly serves residents who are uninsured or underinsured. The DBHDD sources used for this page do not set out a single income cutoff, so each admissions team explains its own screening. Intake staff may ask about your Georgia residence, household income and any coverage you have. Bring a photo ID, recent pay stubs or a benefits letter, and any insurance card you hold.

The Georgia Crisis and Access Line (GCAL), 1-800-715-4225, is the main way into Georgia’s public system. The line can:

  • give crisis help by phone
  • send mobile crisis teams
  • help find an open crisis or detox bed anywhere in the state
  • book urgent appointments
  • connect callers with state-funded providers

You can also call a listed provider directly and ask whether it holds a DBHDD contract for the level of care you need.

Is there a waitlist, and who gets priority in Georgia?

A waitlist is possible in Georgia’s state-funded system, because contracted programs have a set number of funded places. Federal block grant rules give admission preference to pregnant people and to people who inject drugs. The same rules require a program that cannot admit someone right away to offer interim services, such as counseling and referral, while the person waits.

Georgia women who are pregnant or parenting children under 13 can also ask about DBHDD’s Women’s Treatment and Recovery Services. Programs that list care for this group are gathered on the rehab for pregnant women in Georgia page.

What if I qualify for Georgia Medicaid instead?

Georgia has not adopted the Affordable Care Act adult Medicaid expansion, so traditional Georgia Medicaid is closed to many low-income adults. In its place, Georgia Pathways to Coverage was approved by federal regulators in October 2020. It covers residents with income up to and including 100% of the federal poverty level who complete 80 hours a month of work or other qualifying activities. Pathways eligibility rules change on January 1, 2027.

If you might qualify for Medicaid or Pathways, applying first can make sense. That coverage is not tied to a limited number of state-funded places. Programs that take Medicaid are listed under Medicaid rehab.

RouteWho it fits
State funding through DBHDDUninsured or underinsured Georgia residents
Georgia MedicaidPeople who meet traditional Medicaid rules
Georgia PathwaysIncome up to 100% of poverty level, with qualifying activities
Sliding scale or free careAnyone who falls between the routes above

Georgia providers that set fees by income are on the sliding scale rehab page. Programs reporting no-cost care are on the free rehab in Georgia page.

How should I read the Georgia listings?

Each Georgia listing on RehabSeekers.com is built from four kinds of source: government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and details providers send in about their own programs. Payment types, license status and accreditation are shown as reported. A short call to confirm that state funding is open for your situation is worth making before you travel.

Recovery housing in Georgia has no state certification or registry that we could find. The Georgia Association of Recovery Residences offers voluntary certification, and homes are listed on the sober living in Georgia page.

Georgia’s accountability courts can also route participants into treatment. Those courts follow standards and certification set by the Council of Accountability Court Judges, and related programs are on the court-ordered rehab page.

Callers who cannot reach GCAL can dial 988 or the national treatment referral line. To browse every program type in the state, start from the main Georgia page.
