Treatment Centers in Minnesota That Accept Aetna

Aetna covers drug and alcohol rehab for Minnesotans through employer plans, through Allina Health | Aetna (the insurer it owns jointly with Allina Health) and through two plans it administers for postal and federal staff, Mail Handlers and Rural Carrier. Aetna runs no Medical Assistance plan here, and Minnesota was never one of its 17 marketplace states.

Every program here shows a phone number, its services (from withdrawal management to residential care, outpatient groups or medication) and, for programs that hold it, CARF or Joint Commission accreditation. The entries are drawn from public registers and state licensing data. Pick a city, then ask if Aetna counts the program as in network.

Does Aetna Cover Rehab in Minnesota?

Yes, if you hold an Aetna plan through a Minnesota job or a federal or postal position. Aetna’s member site lists substance use alongside depression and anxiety as behavioral conditions, and the employer’s own plan document spells out which levels of care are paid. Rehabs that accept Aetna show up among the Minnesota treatment centers on this page.

Aetna reaches Minnesota members in three ways. National Aetna employer plans, most of them self-funded, cover employees of Minnesota companies. Allina Health | Aetna, a Minnesota insurer jointly owned with Allina Health, sells self-funded Funding Advantage plans to small businesses and Medicare Advantage plans. Aetna also administers the Mail Handlers and Rural Carrier plans for federal and postal workers.

Does Aetna Cover Inpatient Rehab in Minnesota?

Yes, if the employer’s plan includes it. Under its behavioral precertification rules, Aetna treats days in a residential center or addiction treatment facility like a hospital admission. A 2026 Choice POS II certificate from one New York employer pays semi-private room charges at inpatient rehab programs, and the same rule applies to residential programs that take insurance.

How long will Aetna pay for residential rehab?

Aetna does not print a day limit for residential care in Minnesota. Reviewers judge whether more days are needed using The ASAM Criteria, supported by Aetna’s Clinical Policy Bulletins and MCG guidelines. That fits how Minnesota programs are built: the Department of Human Services makes licensed residential and withdrawal programs certify which ASAM levels they provide.

Does Aetna need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes. Before an inpatient stay, residential treatment or partial hospitalization, Aetna requires precertification, and the October 2026 version of Aetna’s general list says it also governs Allina Health | Aetna plans. The commercial precertification number is 1-888-632-3862; the Medicare number is 1-800-624-0756. If the program is outside the network, that call is the member’s job.

Does Aetna Cover Detox in Minnesota?

Yes. A stay at medical detox units taking insurance is an inpatient confinement for Aetna and needs precertification, while the 2026 Choice POS II certificate also pays for ambulatory detox with medication. Aetna dropped precertification for outpatient detox on commercial plans at the start of 2019. In Minnesota, residential withdrawal programs hold their own chapter 245F license.

Does Aetna Cover Outpatient Rehab in Minnesota?

Yes. Substance use therapy and office visits are covered in person, and by video if a Minnesota employer has added CVS Virtual Care or Teladoc Health. Aetna stopped precertifying intensive outpatient programs on commercial plans in 2019, and the 2026 Choice POS II certificate pays for peer counseling from supervised peer support specialists.

Partial hospitalization, a full-day outpatient level, is the exception: Aetna precertifies it on both commercial and Medicare plans. Summaries for three named Aetna employer plans from 2025 and 2026 show a per-visit copay or coinsurance for outpatient behavioral care and no yearly visit cap, so a Minnesota member would find any cap only in the employer’s schedule of benefits.

Does Aetna Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes, on the formulary a Minnesota plan uses. Pharmacy benefits for Aetna members run through CVS Caremark, part of the same CVS Health family, and every Minnesota employer selects the formulary its plan follows. Before a first prescription, a member can type the year and the plan’s name into Aetna’s drug search to see how medication-assisted treatment options are covered.

Does Aetna cover Suboxone?

Yes. Buprenorphine products, Suboxone among them, were dropped from Aetna’s commercial prior authorization rules in March 2017, which lets Suboxone clinics taking insurance start treatment without waiting on Aetna. The member’s share for each fill still follows the tier the Minnesota employer’s formulary assigns.

Does Aetna cover methadone?

Yes, for members on Aetna Medicare or an Allina Health | Aetna Medicare Advantage plan, since Medicare covers opioid treatment program care, from methadone dosing to buprenorphine or naltrexone plus counseling. Minnesotans covered through an employer should ask the clinic whether it bills their Aetna plan before beginning methadone maintenance programs, since plan documents differ.

Aetna Rehab Centers by Minnesota Lakes, Rivers and the North Woods

Aetna’s Minnesota members are spread across employer, federal and Medicare plans rather than a county-based Medicaid map, so the benefit design matters more than the scenery. HMO and EPO designs leave out-of-network programs unpaid except in emergencies; POS and PPO designs, Choice POS II among them, pay those programs too, with the member carrying more of the cost.

Aetna rehab near Lake Minnetonka

Aetna members in western Hennepin County, around Lake Minnetonka, Wayzata and Excelsior, can look at treatment centers near lakes and Minnetonka addiction programs. A Minnetonka company that self-funds its Aetna plan, rather than buying insured coverage, decides which levels of care the plan pays while Aetna handles claims.

Aetna rehab along the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers

Aetna members in Washington County live where the St. Croix marks the Wisconsin line at Stillwater, while the Mississippi runs through the Twin Cities to Red Wing. Rehabs near rivers and Stillwater recovery programs may sit a short drive from programs in Hudson or River Falls in Wisconsin; a Wisconsin program’s network status depends on its own Aetna contract.

Aetna rehab in the northern forests

Aetna members heading north to the Superior and Chippewa national forests often look at programs around Brainerd, Grand Rapids and Duluth. Rehabs near national forests in these counties need the same Aetna precertification for a residential stay as a Twin Cities program, and an out-of-network choice costs more on POS plans.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Aetna in Minnesota?

Look through the listings on this page. For each Minnesota program you get its services, accreditation and a number to call, and the list can be narrowed by town, insurer or level of care. Programs grouped under private insurance rehab include ones that bill Aetna employer plans; admissions staff can tell you whether they take your Aetna network.

Aetna precertification comes first for any inpatient, residential or partial hospitalization admission. A program can phone Aetna with its intake findings, or the member can also call Aetna using the number on the card and give the program’s name. The table below pairs each Aetna product active in Minnesota in 2026 with its phone line.

Gravie, a Minneapolis benefits company, sells level-funded plans to local employers, and some of those plans use the Aetna Signature Administrators network. Those cards carry payer ID GRV01, with claims mailed to Eagan, and members call Gravie at (866) 863-6232 before admission to downtown Minneapolis rehab programs.

Aetna rehab in Saint Paul and the east metro

Allina Health | Aetna serves Minnesota small businesses with Funding Advantage plans, which are self-funded and open to groups as small as two employees, and it also offers Medicare Advantage plans. Members holding its card call the number printed on it for precertification ahead of a stay at treatment programs in Saint Paul or Woodbury recovery centers.

Aetna rehab in Rochester

Federal and postal workers in Olmsted County who chose the Mail Handlers Benefit Plan carry an Aetna-run card on the Choice POS II network, with member service at 1-800-410-7778. Choice POS II also covers programs outside its network, with members paying more there, so the options among rehab centers in Rochester are wider than on an HMO.

Aetna rehab in Duluth and northern Minnesota

Aetna administers the Rural Carrier Benefit Plan, which covers rural mail carriers who belong to their union, including those driving routes in northern Minnesota. Members call 1-800-638-8432 about benefits before choosing among Duluth addiction treatment programs, and the plan’s benefits are the same in every state.

Can I use Aetna for rehab in a different state?

Yes, for most Minnesotans with Aetna through work, because the Aetna employer network is national. POS and PPO members can also go out of network at a higher cost, arranging precertification themselves. Network-only HMO and EPO designs work differently, and Allina Health | Aetna’s 2026 Elevate plan page limits out-of-network payment to emergency and urgent care.

How much does rehab cost with Aetna?

Aetna costs in Minnesota follow the employer’s plan. Aetna plan summaries show that in-network outpatient behavioral visits carry a flat copay and inpatient care carries coinsurance once the deductible is met, both higher outside the network. Aetna also warns that a non-network program may bill above the allowed amount, and that overage is left out of the out-of-pocket maximum.

Minnesotans whose Aetna coverage ends still have ways to pay. People who lose an Aetna plan may qualify for Medicaid coverage for rehab through Medical Assistance, and the state’s Behavioral Health Fund pays for treatment for some uninsured residents. Sliding scale rehab programs are another route, with fees set by household income and size.
