Why do people become dependent on kratom and 7-OH?

People can become dependent on kratom because its alkaloids act on the brain’s opioid receptors, and taking it every day can lead to tolerance, so larger amounts are needed and stopping brings discomfort. The leaf comes from Mitragyna speciosa, a Southeast Asian tree, and is sold as powder, capsules and brewed drinks.

7-OH is a much stronger product. Manufacturers concentrate 7-hydroxymitragynine, an alkaloid present in the raw leaf only at trace levels, so tolerance to it can climb quickly. Intake teams in Minnesota ask which form a person takes, how often and alongside what else before choosing a level of care.

Under federal rules, kratom leaf is unscheduled, and the Food and Drug Administration has not authorized it for any medical use. A July 2026 action by the Drug Enforcement Administration started temporary scheduling of 7-OH products that are concentrated or synthetic.
