Common questions about Serious Mental Illness

Answered from what is listed here.

Which New Mexico cities have SMI rehabs?

Ask intake staff first whether serious mental illness is treated alongside substance addiction, then start the search in Albuquerque, where New Mexico listings for this care are concentrated. Silver City follows, then Santa Fe, Farmington and San Ysidro. Staff in any of those places can describe how psychiatric and addiction care fit together.

Rehab Centers in Albuquerquehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-mexico/albuquerque/
Do SMI rehabs in New Mexico take Turquoise Care?

Turquoise Care, the state's Medicaid program, is accepted by nearly all of the rehabs for serious mental illness in New Mexico. Before admission, intake staff can check that the program takes it.

Turquoise Care members get coverage through the health plan they are enrolled in: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, Molina Healthcare of New Mexico, Presbyterian Health Plan or UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of New Mexico. Giving the plan name at intake speeds the check.

Rehab Centers in New Mexico That Accept Turquoise Carehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-mexico/turquoise-care/
Are there SMI rehabs near the mountains in New Mexico?

Mountains lie within 25 miles of most of the rehabs for serious mental illness in New Mexico, at a median of about 9.1 miles from listed facilities, measured from each program to the nearest mountain.

The most-named features are The Volcanoes, the Silver City Range and the Santa Fe Mountains. Families comparing programs can ask intake staff how far a given address sits from any of them.

What counts as a serious mental illness, and how is it treated alongside substance use?

A serious mental illness is a mental health condition that substantially limits everyday life, such as work, relationships or self-care, for an extended period, and in New Mexico it is treated alongside substance misuse through one coordinated plan. The term usually covers schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder and major depression with significant impairment.

Many other mental health conditions are real and treatable but affect daily functioning less. Coordinated care means psychiatric treatment and substance use disorder treatment are provided together, either by one team or by teams that share information. More on combined care is on the dual diagnosis rehab in New Mexico page.

Some programs accept people with psychotic or bipolar disorders and others do not, so ask intake staff directly. Ask too whether the program will continue antipsychotics, mood stabilizers and long-acting injectables, and how the on-site prescriber will coordinate with your current psychiatrist. Not every residential program allows medication for opioid or alcohol use disorder either.

Public mental health care in the state runs through the Behavioral Health Services Division of the Health Care Authority. Anyone can call the Crisis and Access Line at 1-855-662-7474 to talk through options, and Turquoise Care members can ask their plan for in-network providers and an assessment.

Levels of care listed in New Mexico

New Mexico programs for people with serious mental illness and substance use report several levels of care, from hospital-based psychiatric units to weekly outpatient visits. Programs also differ in whether they accept people with psychotic or bipolar disorders. Some list co-occurring capability for those conditions and others do not, so ask intake staff directly.

Level of careWhat it usually involves
Psychiatric inpatientRound-the-clock medical and psychiatric care during acute symptoms
Withdrawal managementMedically supervised withdrawal from alcohol or drugs
ResidentialLive-in treatment with daily structure and on-site staff
Partial hospitalization (PHP)Most of the day in treatment, nights at home
Intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatientSeveral sessions a week, or regular appointments, while living at home

Programs for this term in New Mexico are spread fairly evenly: 33 percent sit in urban areas, 37 percent in towns and 30 percent in rural settings. Half are at high elevation, with a median of 5,160 feet. The median distance to the nearest airport is 10.8 miles, and Albuquerque International Sunport is the airport that comes up most often. Three in four are within 25 miles of a river, most often the Jemez River.

Checking licensing, accreditation and languages

New Mexico splits oversight between two divisions of the Health Care Authority. The Division of Health Improvement licenses health facilities, and the Behavioral Health Services Division approves specialized behavioral health programs. Listings may show Joint Commission or CARF accreditation where a provider reports it. You can also filter by Spanish-language services and by populations served.

Where do adults with serious mental illness get public mental health care in New Mexico?

The Behavioral Health Services Division of the New Mexico Health Care Authority is the state’s mental health and substance use authority. Two routes lead into the public system:

  • New Mexico Crisis and Access Line: anyone can call to talk through options and get connected to services.
  • Turquoise Care health plan: Medicaid members can ask their plan for in-network behavioral health providers and for an assessment.

When you speak with a provider, ask about the community supports they offer or can refer you to:

  • Assertive community treatment teams
  • Coordinated specialty care for early psychosis
  • Peer support specialists
  • Supported housing

For lower-cost options, see state-funded rehab in New Mexico.

Tribal members can use the Albuquerque Area and Navajo Area Indian Health Service, which includes the medical centers in Shiprock and Gallup. Veterans can contact the VA medical center in Albuquerque.

Does New Mexico Medicaid cover treatment for serious mental illness and substance use?

New Mexico Medicaid, called Turquoise Care, covers behavioral health services, including mental health and substance use treatment. Turquoise Care runs through four managed care plans:

  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico
  • Molina Healthcare of New Mexico
  • Presbyterian Health Plan
  • UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of New Mexico

The state expanded Medicaid to more low-income adults beginning in 2014. Payment details are on the Medicaid rehab page. Listings also show Medicare, private insurance and self-pay where providers report them.

Video visits are covered, and Medicaid now also covers audio-only behavioral health visits when a member is at home and cannot or does not agree to video; see telehealth rehab in New Mexico.

Will a program in New Mexico continue my psychiatric medications during substance use treatment?

Some programs continue psychiatric medications through substance use treatment and others do not, so ask before admission. Questions to raise with the admissions team:

  • Will the program continue antipsychotics, mood stabilizers and long-acting injectables?
  • Who on site prescribes, and how will that person coordinate with your current psychiatrist?

Medications for opioid or alcohol use disorder deserve the same questions, since not every residential program allows them. For opioid treatment options, see Suboxone clinics in New Mexico.

What crisis help is available for serious mental illness in New Mexico?

New Mexico has several crisis options, depending on how urgent the situation is:

  • Immediate danger: call 911.
  • 988: call or text for support with mental health, alcohol or drug concerns.
  • New Mexico Crisis and Access Line: 1-855-662-7474, answered 24 hours a day.
  • Peer-to-Peer Warmline: 1-855-466-7100, answered by phone from 3:00 to 11:30 p.m., with text from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m.

The crisis line can tell you whether mobile crisis teams or crisis stabilization services cover your area.

New Mexico’s Assisted Outpatient Treatment Act allows alcohol and drug treatment to be part of a court-ordered outpatient plan. The state’s treatment courts include mental health courts; see court-ordered rehab in New Mexico. Programs in other categories are listed on the New Mexico rehab directory.
