Rehab Centers in Georgia That Accept Medicare

Medicare can help pay for drug and alcohol treatment in Georgia, but only for certain services and only when the provider is enrolled with Medicare. The programs listed here report that they accept Medicare. The listings draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details supplied by the providers themselves.

Georgia programs that list Medicare reach well beyond Atlanta. About half are in towns, a quarter are in rural areas and just under a quarter are in cities. Macon, Gainesville and Covington appear most often. For half of these programs, the nearest airport is 25 miles away or less, and DeKalb Peachtree is the nearest airport more often than any other.

Common questions about Medicare Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are Medicare rehabs in Georgia?

Listings for rehab that accepts Medicare in Georgia cluster first in Macon, then in Gainesville, Covington, Vidalia and Valdosta, in that order. Someone on Medicare can start a search in one of those five places or in a nearby larger city.

Atlanta and Athens are larger cities near these clusters, and a search in either reaches a bigger urban area as well as nearby listings in Georgia.

Rehab Centers in Maconhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/macon-ga/
Do Medicare rehabs in Georgia take Georgia Medicaid?

Georgia Medicaid is recorded as accepted by nearly all of the rehabs that take Medicare in Georgia, so people with both coverages can find a program that takes the pair. Before admission, ask intake staff which coverage is billed first and whether any share of the cost is left to the patient.

Rehab Centers in Georgia That Accept Georgia Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/georgia-medicaid/
Are there Medicare rehabs near a river in Georgia?

Most of the rehabs that take Medicare in Georgia sit within 25 miles of a river, at a median of about 14.7 miles from the nearest one. Dog River, Yellow River and Little Ohoopee River are the rivers named near these programs, though any one listing may be closer or farther away.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

Does Medicare pay for addiction treatment in Georgia?

Yes, Medicare covers medically necessary substance use treatment in Georgia, including hospital care, outpatient services and some medications, when a Medicare-enrolled provider delivers it. Medicare is a federal benefit, so a Georgia resident on Original Medicare has the same parts and limits as someone in any other state.

Medicare is not only for adults 65 and older. People under 65 qualify after receiving Social Security disability benefits for 24 months. People with end-stage renal disease or ALS also qualify. Many Georgians under 65 on Medicare also qualify for Georgia Medicaid, which matters for the services Medicare leaves out.

Whether a program can bill Medicare depends on its enrollment and on who provides the care. Since 2024, licensed mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists can enroll as Medicare providers, which has widened outpatient choices. Even when a listing reports Medicare, ask whether the clinician you would see is enrolled.

Which parts of Medicare cover detox, outpatient care and medications?

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, Part B covers outpatient and clinic care, and Part D covers prescription drugs.

PartSubstance use servicesCosts to expect
Part AInpatient hospital care, including medically managed withdrawal, and stays in a psychiatric hospitalA deductible for each benefit period. Days in a freestanding psychiatric hospital are limited to 190 over a lifetime.
Part BOutpatient counseling and therapy, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, and opioid treatment program services including methadoneAn annual deductible, then coinsurance for most services
Part DPrescriptions such as buprenorphine and naltrexonePlan premiums and copays, with a yearly cap on out-of-pocket drug costs

Medicare posts the current year’s deductibles and coinsurance amounts, which change each January. The full federal rules are on the national Medicare rehab page.

Georgia programs that list Medicare describe a wide range of care. Options include detox in Georgia, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs and standard outpatient rehab. Many programs also treat co-occurring mental health conditions. Medication for opioid use disorder is offered through methadone clinics and Suboxone clinics. From January 1, 2026, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) licenses the state’s Narcotic Treatment Programs.

Does Medicare cover residential rehab, and what are the options if it does not?

Medicare generally does not pay for residential rehab at a facility that is not a hospital, and it does not pay for sober living. Many people expect Medicare to cover residential rehab in Georgia, and most of the time it does not.

Georgians who have both Medicare and Georgia Medicaid are called dual-eligible. Medicare pays first, and Georgia Medicaid may cover some remaining costs and some services Medicare does not. Ask the Medicaid plan or caseworker what applies before choosing a residential program. Georgia Medicaid also runs Medicare Savings Programs, which help people with limited income pay Medicare premiums and, in some cases, deductibles and coinsurance.

DBHDD contracts with treatment providers across six state regions. Some of these providers offer state-funded rehab for people whose coverage falls short. Programs offering sliding scale fees set charges by income and can fill the gap left by Medicare.

How do Medicare Advantage plans in Georgia handle substance use treatment?

Medicare Advantage plans in Georgia must cover what Original Medicare covers, but each plan sets its own network, costs and prior authorization rules. A program listed as accepting Medicare may take Original Medicare and still be out of network for a given Advantage plan. Partial hospitalization, inpatient stays and some medications often need plan approval before care starts. Call the number on the plan card to ask whether the program is in network.

What to ask a program before admission

Ask the admissions team four questions before you start:

  • Is the program enrolled in Medicare or in your plan’s network?
  • Which services will be billed to Medicare?
  • What will you likely pay out of pocket?
  • Are visits available by video?

Medicare allows many behavioral health visits by telehealth, including from home. Telehealth rehab can help people far from a clinic.

Where can people on Medicare in Georgia get free help comparing coverage?

Georgia’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) gives free, one-on-one Medicare counseling, including help comparing Advantage and Part D plans. You can also get free help from these lines:

  • 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) answers coverage questions and can connect you with SHIP counselors.
  • The Georgia Crisis and Access Line, 1-800-715-4225, helps find open crisis or detox beds and state-funded providers.
  • The national treatment referral line, 1-800-662-4357, and the 988 crisis line are free and open around the clock.

Where these programs are located can matter as much as coverage. About 77 percent of the listed programs sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the Dog River. Elevations range from 20 feet near the coast to 2,740 feet in the north. Stone Mountain is the named summit that appears most often near a listing. To compare every type of care across the state, start from the Georgia rehab listings.
