Online Rehab and Telehealth in Minnesota

Online rehab in Minnesota means licensed substance use treatment delivered by video or phone: counseling sessions, virtual intensive outpatient groups and, with some providers, medication visits. Programs listing telehealth here are based across the state, with Minneapolis, Duluth and Rochester appearing most often. Where a program has its office matters less than whether its clinicians can treat you in the place where you live.

Listings on RehabSeekers.com draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information the providers send us. Program details change often, so confirm hours, insurance and telehealth options with intake staff before your first session.

Common questions about Telehealth Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Minnesota cities have online rehab programs?

Commonly, online rehab providers serving Minnesota are based in Minneapolis, with Duluth, Rochester, Richfield and Grand Rapids next in line. Sessions run by video or phone, so a provider's home base matters less than whether it serves your part of the state.

Minneapolis, Duluth and Rochester are also the larger cities within reach for anyone who later wants occasional in-person appointments alongside online sessions or a face-to-face assessment.

Rehab Centers in Minneapolishttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/minnesota/minneapolis/
Do online rehab programs in Minnesota take Minnesota Medical Assistance?

Minnesota Medical Assistance is accepted by nearly all of the online rehab programs in Minnesota. Members get care through an enrolled health plan, such as Hennepin Health, PrimeWest Health or South Country Health Alliance, so confirming the provider is in that plan's network comes before a first video session.

Rehab Centers in Minnesota That Accept Minnesota Medical Assistancehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/minnesota/minnesota-medical-assistance/
Are there online rehab programs near a river in Minnesota?

The Minnesota River, Credit River and Rum River are the rivers named near online rehab programs in Minnesota, and nearly all of the online rehab programs in Minnesota sit within 25 miles of a river.

The median is about 7.3 miles from listed facilities to the nearest river. Because online sessions happen wherever you log in, a provider's riverside address matters mainly for occasional in-person visits or a later move to on-site care.

What does online addiction treatment look like in Minnesota?

Online addiction treatment in Minnesota is clinical care held over a secure video link, and sometimes by phone. It can include assessments, individual and group counseling, virtual intensive outpatient programs and medication management. Substance use disorder programs in the state are licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services under Minnesota Statutes chapter 245G. Many people use telehealth alongside in-person outpatient care rather than in place of it.

Online peer support meetings are a different thing. Many people value them, but they have no clinician, no treatment plan and no assessment, so they are not treatment. The national telehealth guide explains the difference in more detail.

Minnesota programs that list telehealth still have a physical base, which matters if your plan includes some office visits. Of those programs, 40 percent are in urban areas, 34 percent are in towns and 27 percent are rural. Almost all of them, 99 percent, sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the Minnesota River. For 52 percent, the closest airport is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International. The median distance to the nearest airport is 14.4 miles.

Privacy and setup at home

Video sessions should run on a platform built to meet HIPAA requirements, and you can ask the provider which one they use. No platform makes a session fully private. Find a room where others can’t overhear you, use headphones if you can, and avoid devices that other people in the household share. Minnesota teens have their own protection here: under Minn. Stat. 144.343, a minor of any age may consent to alcohol and drug services. Programs for younger people are listed under teen rehab in Minnesota.

Do online treatment providers need a Minnesota license?

Yes, a clinician treating you by telehealth generally needs a Minnesota license. The rules that apply follow where you are during the session, not where the provider’s office is. To check, ask the program which Minnesota license each clinician holds, then search that name with the board that issued the license. You can also ask whether the program itself holds a Department of Human Services license under chapter 245G. If you will be traveling out of state during treatment, tell the clinician ahead of time.

Does Minnesota Medical Assistance or my insurance pay for telehealth addiction treatment?

Minnesota Medical Assistance pays for substance use disorder treatment delivered by real-time two-way audio and video. Audio-only care is covered until July 1, 2027, when the appointment is scheduled and the standard of care can be met by phone alone. These rules come from the Minnesota Health Care Programs provider manual, revised July 31, 2026.

FormatMedical Assistance rule
Video with audioCovered for substance use disorder treatment
Audio only, scheduledCovered until July 1, 2027 if the standard of care can be met
Audio only, unscheduledAllowed when the member starts the contact in an emergency or crisis

Many Medical Assistance members get their coverage through a health plan, such as Blue Plus, HealthPartners, Hennepin Health, Medica, PrimeWest Health, South Country Health Alliance or UCare. Check telehealth rules with your plan, and see the Medicaid listings. Medicare and private insurers set their own telehealth terms. Before you start, call the number on your card and ask three things: is the program in network, what is the copay, and is phone-only care covered? For context on cost, Medical Assistance pays programs $86.53 an hour for individual counseling and $42.04 an hour for group counseling as of January 2026. Those are rates paid to programs, not prices charged to patients.

Can I start medication for opioid use disorder through telehealth in Minnesota?

Buprenorphine can be prescribed by telehealth in some situations, but the federal rules have changed several times since 2020. Confirm the current terms with the prescriber before you rely on a remote start. State sources show no separate Minnesota rule on starting buprenorphine by telehealth, so federal controlled substance rules set the limits. Some prescribers ask for an in-person visit at some point, and some Suboxone clinics in Minnesota offer both formats. Methadone is different. It is dispensed through opioid treatment programs licensed by the Department of Human Services under Minn. Stat. 245G.22, so expect regular in-person visits at a methadone clinic.

When is in-person care the safer choice?

In-person care is usually the safer starting point when stopping a substance could cause dangerous withdrawal. Alcohol and benzodiazepines are the clearest examples. Other reasons to ask for an in-person assessment first include past seizures or severe withdrawal, pregnancy, serious medical or mental health conditions, and a home that isn’t safe or stable. Programs offering supervised withdrawal care are listed under detox in Minnesota.

Anyone treated at home should agree on a crisis plan with their provider. If opioids are involved, keep naloxone at home. Minnesota pharmacists may dispense it under a Board of Pharmacy protocol. In a crisis, call or text 988. Minnesota has no statewide substance use phone line. An online search of treatment openings called Fast-Tracker has been available, but confirm that it is still current.

Using these listings

Each Minnesota listing shows whether a program offers telehealth, which insurers it accepts, its languages and the groups it serves. Filter for what matters to you, including Spanish-speaking programs, then compare options on the Minnesota treatment page.
